Goals are Results. Important and Urgent are Actions.

I’ve written several times about the four quadrants of activity.

1. Important & Urgent gets first priority for most people because these activities tend to be central to-do’s and they have a deadline.

2. Important but Not Urgent are things we can put off until the future without immediate consequences. Exercise, relationship building, planning & preparation are major items in this quadrant. When some of these actions are left undone for too long they move to quadrant 1; for example, prolonged lack of exercise can turn into an important and urgent health issue.

3. Urgent but Not Important are typically other people’s urgencies. Answering the phone or handling email when we should be focused on quadrants 1 & 2 is common. People who spend too much time in this quadrant are said to be ‘slaves to the urgent’.

4. Not Urgent and Not Important. TV is the main thing here.

The most successful people are those that spend as much time as possible in quadrant 2, especially with relationship building. The way to have more time to spend more time in quadrant to 2 is to spend as little time as possible in quadrants 3 & 4.

It is most important to distinguish that quadrants describe actions not goals. Goals are reached, quickly or slowly or not at all, depending on which quadrants get your time. As I say, the most successful action strategy is more time in quadrant 2 building the relationships to help you reach your goal, which is a result.

The Government is operating so far outside of its design parameters that this type of discussion is futile. In my opinion the place to start is eliminating tax which would force massive reductions in power and programs, bringing the govt. more in line with the founders structure. Only then can a discussion vis-a-vis federal and state govts. become worthwhile.
